The Future You Depends On You

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML
I learned something new this past weekend. Something I was dependent on from others for a few years now. Learning to back up my jet ski trailer is something I never prioritized or put any focus on. My future self is proud of me today. I have put in the reps and continued to show up powerfully even when the anxiety of failure was holding me hostage. The future you is waiting and wants you to win.
Jet Skis and Accountability
  • Yesterday we spent the day at the lake, and I wasn't looking forward to it on Friday. My daughter is relentless about holding me accountable. The entire week she has wanted to go to the lake; my biggest apprehension was that I didn't know how to back up the trailer. We have a few jet skis we bought two years ago, and I have always been dependent on someone else. It came to a point where I had to ask a stranger to back the trailer up. I never took the time or put my focus on learning how to back up a trailer.
  • If you have never done it before, the first thing that will happen is that you are going to jackknife. There are certain skill sets you must have to back up a trailer. I haven't taken it seriously or prioritized it; I always assumed someone else would figure it out for me. Because my brother in law was unable to go last weekend, we didn't go. I had to disappoint my daughter. I promised her last week that I would learn how to do this. I didn't take the time to prioritize it or take the necessary actions to go out there and do the reps.
  • On Friday, I avoided going home right away because I knew my daughter would ask about the lake. I was becoming angry because she didn't see how hard I work, making stories up. After all, I wasn't living up to the things I said. We all do this and get upset with our spouses, clients, and kids, working up a feeling of resentment about why they should understand.
  • As soon as I walked in the door, there was my daughter. She was excited and couldn't wait to go to the lake. I felt an immediate pressure because I knew I was coming up short. I got a little upset with her and told her I didn't think we would be going. She immediately let me know how she didn't like that; she repeated everything I told her I would do. I felt like I was having a panic attack and became overwhelmed with how I couldn't back up the trailer.
  • I knew I would make mistakes or damage my car, which I did; 2,000 dollars worth to Carla's car. While I was practicing the week before, I damaged the car's body because I jackknifed it. To do this in front of an audience was not what I wanted to do. I had a crucial conversation with my daughter and told her we couldn't do it on Saturday, but we would invite the family in case I couldn't do it on Sunday. We would spend Saturday learning how to back up the trailer.
Anxiety and a Jackknife
  • We hooked up the SUV trailer and found an industrial center that had a ramp that went down. It simulated the ramp to the lake. I started to remember all of the things that were required. I had to refocus on everything that I had seen my brother in law do. I watched YouTube videos on it, and I tried it a few times before this being successful part of the time.
  • I came in this time with real intention and understanding of why I was doing this. In real estate, we don't see that until we start doing the reps. We want to know why or how or what; we see others producing at a high level and want to do the same. I tell new agents all of the time to get where they want to be. They need to watch our top producers and mimic them. Instead, they try to come up with their way or path to do those things.
  • I mimicked my brother in law, and the videos and I made a lot of mistakes. With those mistakes, you know the questions to ask. You begin to understand why you have to do it. We have a process of social media marketing here, the things you must post daily. Power, Purpose, and Profits. When it comes to Power, it is taking care of yourself and the routines that you have. The process of Purpose is showcasing your family and self-development. Finally, Profits is anything having to do with your business, showcasing the work, showing houses, etc.
  • We have a specific way to do things, and most don't do them. They have apprehension about making mistakes. The Top Producers here have been through the process and made the mistakes. They had to overcome those fears and anxiety about what others would think. I had to overcome the anxiety of looking like an idiot trying to back up the trailer, jackknifing, and holding everyone up. These are the real thoughts that I had. Unless I started to do it, moving forward and taking action would never come to fruition.
  • This action has opened a new perspective for me, as it will for you. If you are stuck in your business, you may not be doing what is required from a Top Producer. Go out and mimic those Top Producers until you find your way. I found my way; I understand the process of backing up that trailer; I dominated it. The day I went there, I did it in one try. It was so liberating because I am no longer dependent or wondering why or how to do it. These questions could not be answered until I actually did it. I kept showing up and trying repeatedly.
The Future You
  • Last week we discussed whether you gained market share through the COVID scare. You either took the actions that were required, or you didn't. Now you are either benefiting from the actions or hurting from the inaction. It's a lesson we must learn and that we continue to reflect on. The future you wants you to win, and the future me wanted me to win weeks ago when I began to learn how to back up that trailer. I wanted to show up powerfully for my family, and see the smiles on their faces; I got that this past weekend.
  • I sat and watched my daughters on the jet skies with the biggest smiles on their faces. The future me, which is today, wanted that when I first purchased them. I couldn't deliver at that level without depending on someone else. The smiles that I got yesterday were much more satisfying because I could deliver on my end. The future you, depends on you right now, building a good dependable business depends on it. The future you is wanting you to win; your actions matter. How you take your actions matter and what actions you take matter. Your actions move your future; we see a whole new level of possibility because we aren't dependent on someone else's schedule.
  • We were making plans yesterday at the lake on how we could go as only a family. This person right here was depending on that person to make those mistakes. If you are benefiting from all the deals you have closed in the last four weeks, you are pleased with the person who took action. The future you, as you sit now, is questioning the person from eight weeks ago and wondering why you didn't do more things.
  • Our life continues to move forward as long as we are alive. There will be consequences or rewards eight or nine weeks from now, even tomorrow, depending on what you do today. Today we have a lot to celebrate. I was at the lake, and it was satisfying to watch all of the people hanging out. I haven't seen that in a long time. The three other times I went to the lake, it was barren. This time it was as if I had forgotten what it was to be an American on Memorial Weekend.
  • Is it reckless? I don't know. Was it the best thing to do? Who knows. I think all of those people were finding satisfaction that they live in a free country. It made me feel good. Living in constant fear wasn't good for anyone.
The Small Wins
  • I’m learning, and the future you are wanting you to win. What you decide to do today, the future you will thank you, or be upset with you. I now love the person I was because he continues to show up, just like I am today. I'm not going to break this streak of Mindset Mastery on Mondays. Whether there is one person or thirty, it doesn't matter; I am here. That alone gives me the fire I need to continue to move forward; I said, and then I did.
  • Do you want satisfaction? Say it and then do it. Do you want fulfillment? Say it, then do it. It will open up a new realm of possibility. You don't want to sit in regret and wonder what if. Think about what you can do right now. Your future is wanting you to win. Your actions matter, how you take your actions, and what actions you make matters. Let that resonate with you. I am happy and satisfied with the things I have done, the small wins.
  • Backing up a simple trailer, not the phenomenal week we had at the brokerage last week. That is expected, it's the small wins that fuels me to be here today, and to share that with you. We are all in this game together, and there are certain patterns Top Producers take; a certain pattern people on fire take. It is usually closely tied to what they said, they did.
  • What do you want? Continue to mimic those that have done it. Through those reps, you will find your path. Don't try to figure out that path or voice right now; you need to do it. Trust the process that you will get what you want. The reps, the practice, and your conviction will get you there.
  • People ask me how I got where I am at? Merely showing up and doing what you said will get you there. It's overcoming when you don't get the results that will get you there, which can be difficult for some. Trusting that it will work, trusting yourself is the biggest asset you have. It can go unchecked, unrewarded, and without results. Getting no results and continuing to do the work is the toughest thing anyone can do.
  • There was no satisfaction in damaging my vehicle and getting frustrated in the process. When I met my goal, I was satisfied with everything because I stayed focused on my goal.
In Closing
  • There are many similarities between sports and business, between spirituality and a sense of purpose in business. I have been watching the documentary, “The Last Dance,” with Michael Jordan. It showcases what it takes to win and the mindset of intention. When I say that your actions matter, how you take them matters, and what actions you take matters, you will see this throughout the documentary.
  • Some people merely show up and those that show up with intention, knowing they will get what they are looking for. Knowing they will get what they seek. Others are going through the motions and benefit from just being on the team. Michael Jordan is a guy who continues to push. He had to go through his ordeals, losing his father, and he retired from the Chicago Bulls for a year and a half.
  • The second in line, Scottie Pippen took over. He continued to benefit from the structure that Michael Jordan left; the competitive nature. Soon after, it all dwindled, and he felt entitled. He is automatically the leader of the team, he had been there, won these championships, but he took a smaller role; he didn't understand that. He didn't hold everyone else to a higher level. We don't hold ourselves to a higher level, we retract.
  • His team began to retract, yet Scottie felt entitled because he was still the leader and made the ultimate mistake. Twenty-five years later, he is still paying for that mistake. Because he didn't get a call to make the final shot, he quit on his team. He said he wouldn't go in because he felt he deserved that. Reeling from what he had done in years past, not what he was doing today, what you do everyday matters.
  • I am here because I am showcasing that consistent action matters, regardless of who is here. You have to maintain that same conviction within your family and household; irrespective of the circumstances, what you do matters. You will not shut down; you will not give in to temptation, mediocrity, complacency, then walking around like it is due to you as if you were a king or a queen of the house. You got to show, you have to do before you can expect. Scottie Pippen missed those two things, and then he expected, and then quit.
  • This is the moment that stuck out to me the most in the documentary because I have quit my family many times. The lasting effects from when you choose not to show up powerfully will cause you to have regret and pain. You will hurt your family and yourself. It doesn't matter what you did yesterday if what you are doing today doesn't align with where you want to go. Scotty quit on his team, and he lives in that regret and shame to this day. Even though they won, he knew that he was no longer that leader. Everyone on his team realized he wasn't that leader; that is a hard place to be.
  • I lost that trust from my family; my daughters knew I wasn't that leader. My wife knew, and it made me feel so small for many years. I showed up small many years after. That is not the place where I needed to be, and I needed to rise and stay in integrity with my word. I do know, and I follow it up; I say it, and I do it. Whatever conflict you are having right now, whether it is finances, your family, your health, you are out of alignment somewhere. Your expectations are through the roof, but your actions are not in alignment with that. Maybe you lost yourself. This is the moment you proclaim what you will do moving forward.
  • Focus on all things; focus on everything. You have the capacity to handle that. Have a safe Memorial Day, and let's stay on our game.
