Investing in material objects is not a lifetime investment. Things break, interests change, and we must be prepared to shift and pivot to get past a bad decision and move on to the next good one. Journaling your experiences will enable you to see your growth and lead others by the lessons and decisions you made along the way. Don't set your mind on your choices' consequences; instead, move on and rise to the next level of your future.
You Made That Bed; Hope You Brought Sheets
  • Every year around my birthday, my family plans a vacation. We would go to San Francisco, Orange County, and this year we took a mini-vacation for four days. This year we went to Orlando, Florida. We decided to go to Universal Studios because my kids don't have great experiences at Disneyland. They love Universal Studios in California, and we went to Orlando to experience the same thing.
  • There is this thing called the VIP experience, and they gave us the VIP guide that took us to all of the rides, cutting in front of everyone. It is a double-edged sword, though. You have all the benefits of going on any ride, no matter how in-demand they are. That's good and bad because you have no time to decompress. You are going from roller coaster to roller coaster, and it affected my equilibrium. Our kids got exhausted fast, and we went on a bunch of rides, including the new features. And it was a great experience but exhausting.
  • For us, we would change a few things. We would take some more time between the rides so we could decompress. Before we got to Universal Studios, when we arrived in Florida, it was dark, and we lost a few hours in the time change. We rented a beach house in Daytona, where I have never been to. We have been to Miami a few times, and it's incredible. There is a lot to do, restaurants and hotels everywhere. I thought it would be nice to stay by the beach for about an hour or so from Orlando. I thought Daytona was the place to go. As soon as we arrived, I realized it's not a destination for people trying to spend time with family. I think it's more of a destination for College kids, or you are looking for a sleepy town and want to hang out at your house. There is nothing there really for tourists.
  • All the streets were dead, the restaurants were closed, and it was only 9 pm. I regretted my decision to stay in Daytona. We pulled up to the beach house, and it was described as a vintage beach house on the ocean. It looked like a haunted house from the outside. It was dark, and there was no one on the streets; it was a 2-story vintage bungalow style home. We were leary as soon as we pulled up. You have to enter on the top story; that is the first floor. We walked in, and it was strange and a little bit frightening for all of us. We are all grouped up, four adults and four kids, bunched up. No one is trying to explore the home on their own. We were opening every door to see where it leads; we went downstairs, which was very dark. There is weird furniture, and we were all skittish. There was an attic also that no one wanted to check out. We didn't go to bed until about 2 am because no one wanted to turn down; we didn't know what to expect from this home.
  • We got up in the morning and looked around and didn't like what we saw. It's raining outside, the experience we were having already wasn't the best. The furniture looked like it was from a Thrift Store, and it was old and didn't match. Carla always takes her sheets when she travels, but I wondered how old the bed was and who had slept in it. We had a choice; we could stay there another three nights, and we made our bed, and now we had to lie in it. That is the mindset I had for many years. If I spent money, we would deal with it regardless. There are many occasions that I have done that and imposed that on my daughter's also. If I bought a skateboard and Madeline only used it twice, I have a chip on my shoulder because I spent all this money on these things, now I expect them to use it all of the time.
  • It's insane that now you have to suffer the consequences because you made a decision. I knew I couldn't handle three more nights here. I knew we spent thousands of dollars renting this place; we requested one, and they denied us. That night we decided to leave, knowing the consequences of losing our money, but I wasn't going to force my family to stay somewhere that wouldn't be a fun experience. It was an investment in my family, and realizing I don't have to suffer the consequences because I made a decision. I could pivot and move; I could change the current reality instead of suffering for three days. That is what we did. As a collective group, we decided to go to Orlando, and we found a resort there. We found what turned out to be one of our best experiences at any resort. It was beautiful; it was in the countryside and a water theme park. There was also a place called Alligator Land. We had so much fun based on the decision we made to change the trajectory of the experience.
You Bought it Now Eat it
  • The whole thought of making your bed and then lying in it is something as entrepreneurs we get away from. I had a hard time doing that, and I experienced holding on to a business because I opened it up when it wasn't working. When I was 25 years old, we opened a UPS store, and the moment we opened, we were bleeding. I held on to that store for over a year because I decided to get into it. I should have walked away and sold it, and I would have saved myself hundreds of thousands of dollars down the line. I had the thought process that I bought it; now you have to eat it. Now you have to use it, and stay at this beach house when I know it's a mistake. Many of us have done that and continue to do it with our spouses, kids, and ourselves. Because we invested the money, we expect to get full use from it, when we don't. It's like expecting my kids not to break their phones; I break my phone. Part of me is saying you aren't getting a new one, thinking because I invested, it should last a lifetime. This is not the case.
  • I have been in a situation where my daughter had a broken iPad for a few weeks because we refused to reinvest. I had that same mindset. You made your bed. Now lie in it. You broke your iPad; that is how you will use it. Like a chip on her shoulder, I'm upset, she is cutting her fingers on her iPad, and I refuse to move forward. As business owners, we need to realize we have to move forward from things that happen. If something doesn't get used, and it's not serving you, pivot and move forward. You don't have to lie in that bed because the decision was made. So we did. We went to The Grove in Orlando, and we had a great time. It could have been much different if I decided to stay at that house because we spent all of that money. I knew my family was more important, and my experience and time were more important.
  • Instead of being upste=t about losing the money, we still had an experience we can laugh at and talk about the haunted house with the second-hand furniture. We had a great time reflecting on your experiences where you have attached yourself to individual decisions that keep you from experiencing something completely different. It happens to all of us in different ways. I knew my UPS store was not serving me, it cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, but because I wanted to make my money back and committed to the investment, I couldn't let it go. I only made things worse. If I had decided to stay at that beach house, it would have only made things worse. None of us were happy, and it was a miserable, scary time.
  • We stick to these ideas that everything will last a lifetime when mistakes are made, and we make them all of the time. Instead of holding our spouses, businesses, and ourselves hostage, we get a computer that doesn't serve you anymore, because you think you spent a thousand dollars on it, you can't buy another one. But, that same piece of technology makes you hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. We have to get out of this mindset, thinking that money is scarce, we are in a position where we can create more money. We don't have to put our happiness on the backburner for the sake of a few dollars. When you get those things that work and bring harmony, you operate faster; you see opportunity more significant. That is the easy way we have to approach it.
  • My daughter got a new iPad, and I realized this brings her happiness, and it allows her to be more efficient with her school work. Why would I refuse that? Because I invested once, and now it's supposed to last a lifetime. Getting out of the scarcity mindset is essential for everyone. Where are you doing that to your family? As parents and spouses, we do that all of the time. If you control the money, the entire family is held hostage. I don't control the money anymore, but I felt I was being held hostage when Carla ran the operation. Then I stepped away and realized if we need to spend money, then we do it.
  • Carla always says, “If you don't like it, change it.” You may lose money, but you will ultimately gain more happiness. There is nothing better than creating harmony at home to enable you to create big things for your business. Where are you attaching scarcity to your life? Just because of a one-time investment, you can no longer shift pivot, so you don't have to accept the unpleasant results.
Bulgarian Lunges, and Airport Sprints
  • We had a great time. The hotel we found opened new opportunities for the trip at a fraction of the cost. On our way home, we ran into a few snags also. Our flights were delayed, and we were stuck on a plane for about an hour. Then we had to run across the airport to catch our connecting flight. We were stressed out running across the airport, but we caught our flight. I was exhausted by the time we got home last night and in bed by 8:30. I realized how important it is to write things down. Last night I knew I needed to get right back in my game; I had a great time with the family, but I understand what keeps me in power. The Prime 3 process, and making sure I take care of myself first.
  • Making sure I listen to the right things, something motivational or inspiring. Also, learning something new for my business. I knew the Prime 3 would be the first thing to happen for me in the morning. One of the texts I sent was to the group I work out with. It said, “Legs.” They knew today we were going to work on legs. One thing about Carla's routine and she is very specific about the exercises she gives. She tells you what exercise, how many reps and sets, and the amount of time you are supposed to rest between each set. This is a very dialed plan of what needs to happen. When you are dialed in, there is not much to think about; it's just doing it. When you write things down, you no longer have to contemplate or analyze them. When you write it down and give yourself a game plan, you just do it. When I looked at the game plan, I knew today would be hard. We have squats, lunges, deadlifts, and this other thing called Bulgarian Lunges. They are an insane workout that made me resentful towards Carla for putting it in the plan.
  • There were four of us this morning, drenched in sweat, and I felt really good. I got home so late that my old mindset wanted to give me a break from Monday so that I could decompress and rest. Or, I am specific about what I want to do and what I want to accomplish the next day. I have energy now that I didn't have 12 hours ago. I have conditioned myself to understand there is a pattern and routine for me to succeed. If I would have walked in here without exercising this morning, I couldn't give you this energy. I would think there was no way for me to operate at my full potential in the back of my mind.
  • When we think about superstitions, there are many out there. If you break a mirror, you get seven years of bad luck. If you walk under a ladder, there is a chance something terrible will happen. If a black cat crosses your path, something is going to go down. All these superstitions are out there, and it changes behaviors if we buy into it. When I was about 16 years old, a friend told me that stuck with me my entire life. I was chewing some gum and threw it out the window, and my friend looked at me with big eyes, and he said I would have bad luck. Anytime you litter, you will have bad luck. I bought into it because of his energy, and his eyes were so wide. I'm 42 now, and I have carried the belief that if I litter, I will have something bad happen to me. That is how powerful beliefs can be.
Superstitions and Leg Day
  • If I don't take care of myself first in the morning, my day will not be effective. Last night I had permitted myself not to do what was required today. I had it in the back of my mind like that gum wrapper, if I throw this out there, something terrible will happen. I never littered for the rest of my life, and I scowl at those who do. This is the type of superstition I want you to believe. If you don't work out in the morning and take care of yourself and your mindset, you will have a bad day. Now I hope you will believe it to force yourself to do the things you don't feel like doing. It will only benefit you in the long run.
  • Last night I wrote out this text, “Legs,” and I went into the day with the most challenging workout you can put on yourself, and the group of us did it on the same day, and it sucked. It hurt and was exhausting. Having a damn mask on my face made it even worse. I feel powerful and great. There is a superstition, a belief that I now have made a fact. If I don't do the right things for myself in the morning, there is no way I can have a powerful day. Some people say they don't do the things I told them to, and they had a great day. I wonder what would have happened if you had done those things? How much greater would your day have been? It's a personal responsibility and the first thing we teach as part of the 12-week Target book. It has nothing to do with real estate but you accessing power to make powerful decisions and not be scared that you may lose. Just as I could make that decision in Daytona, thousands of dollars on the line, and I didn't care. Now I see that power allows me to make those decisions that don't serve me. If I am hesitant, if I come into the day weak, I will hesitate. You may get away with it until you have to deal with a real player in that situation. You will get plowed over and realize the advantage a person in power has over you.
  • The last thing I want is for someone to have an advantage over me. I have never been the brightest bulb in any situation I have been in. One thing for sure, though, I am the most committed because I bought into a simple belief system. If I take care of my body and mind first thing in the morning, I will outwork, outdo, and my results will be greater than anyone else in my sphere. That is the approach we all have to take. If you feel off of your game, if you feel that another agent pulled a fast one on you, if you feel like your clients are controlling you, it might have to do with the deposits you failed to make first thing in the morning. This belief system, and superstition of sorts, I want you to believe that you will never operate at your optimal level if you don't take care of yourself. If you don't take care of your mind and feed it the right things, you will never dominate the day. You may have some good days, but you won't dominate it like a player does each day.
  • I have seen it with my own eyes; it has served me in my life—every aspect of it. My connection with my daughters, my marriage, my body, my business has affected everything. I will continue to have this conversation with you because it will completely change your life trajectory if you do it daily. Knowing no one will have an advantage over you or pull a fast one on you because you are on your game and feel powerful.
  • I wrote something I want to share with you. It talks about the fight and how important it is to journal. This is something I journaled a while back, and it is about writing things down. When you write things down, it makes you more committed. I said, “ You fight because it matters. I understand fully now how much it matters. Yet when things got tough between us, I acted like it didn't matter. It would have been so much easier to concede than to face the issues with both created. I wonder what would have happened if I had given up and not analyzed and changed my behaviors. Nothing would have been as it is today. I love taking my daughters to school every day. I love that they know Dad is always around. I love that I will be the only man they will ever call Dad. I love that I can coach and mentor them. I love that they know I will be there in the morning and to tuck them in bed with a prayer at night. I love that Carla can depend on me. I love that she is my best friend. I love that she knows she can trust me. Yes, it matters. Fight.”
  • This is the approach we have to take when we can go back to a routine proven to work. It takes the fight. A big part of me thought I deserved the rest. It was a long day. Traveling for eight hours and the time change was exhausting. We were up at 2 in the morning to catch our flight and drive an hour and a half back from Orlando to Daytona, catch a flight to North Carolina and Phoenix. It was a long day, and it matters if I fight. Now I believe this thought, this superstition as fact. I have to stay in my power to dominate my day. No one will take advantage of me; no one will pull a fast one; no one will dominate me because I am on my game. I am forcing myself to grow, and that is what occurs.
In Closing
  • Letting go, if we make a mistake, pivot, move, and then write things down and know there is a way for you to access your full power. There is a quote that I wrote down, and it says, “ My conviction to keep going begins with my willingness to get going.” It starts with your will, mindset, and approach. If you believe it as fact, your life will change, and maybe it starts with superstition and the threat of bad luck if you refuse to take care of yourself in the morning.
  • My poor daughter was cutting her fingers just because I invested some money, and I thought she now needed to deal with the consequences. Or forcing our kids to eat an entire meal when they are full just because we bought them a twenty-dollar steak. Let it be. One of the things our trip made us realize is we had a few good experiences with Airbnb, but the last few have been bad. The last two or three days we had at the resort were good. Now we are not Airbnb families. We don't want to go from our house to a stranger's house. We want to go and enjoy what it is to be on vacation. Now we are going straight to a hotel or a resort and not think twice about it. It was a good lesson.
  • Look at your life and see where you are holding onto something that isn't serving you; it's time to move and change. I can remember so many times that I was stuck because a decision was made, and I made that investment. You can pivot and move, you can buy another car, and so many other examples of that. Because we had a game plan for the day, there was no thinking about it. It was all about doing.
  • You will all see the new edition of the 12-week Target book, and this is something I have been putting to the test. I have taken meticulous notes over the last year and updated it. It will be the greatest tool for you to document your day, your tasks and journal what is going on in your day to day lives. Journaling has affected my life tremendously, and I was able to pull these quotes off my past journals. We don't know where we will be in twenty years, and how awesome it would be to come back to who you were twenty years before and be in the same mindset of what was going on. To be able to experience exactly what was going on twenty years later. It's an amazing thing, and I think you will enjoy the new 12-week Target Book. I will have training for that, so keep an eye out for that.
  • It is impossible to feel low in motion when your body is in motion. The whole workout sucked, and we were pushing ourselves for maximum weight. I feel so good right now, and I couldn't come to you energetically if I didn't do those things for myself. You will have bad luck if you don't take care of yourself; I need you to believe that. This is for the long famous, and the reason I put so much emphasis on you to do what's important for your body and mind is it will be what takes you to the next level. We are dealing with the new building and the different obstacles we have to overcome. I couldn't have been there if I didn't take care of myself first and foremost. If you are trying to get to the next level, take care of your mind and body. Our top producers do it, and you can too.
  • It's easy to take it easy after a long, fun weekend. We have to get back into the game mostly on a Monday. We have work to do, and if we were able to enjoy our vacation because of our commitment to what needs to be done. We can't slack on that and hold back. We have to move forward strong. A superstition is a belief system, Prime 3 is a belief system, but it will change your life significantly when you do it daily. I hope you enjoyed the stories I had for you. Decide to make a move. We don't have to stay there or wallow in that place of pity. Buy your kids a phone and an iPad; it's time to replace those. They have learned their lesson. Thank you for joining me for another episode of Mindset Mastery, I enjoyed being here, and I hope you enjoyed it as well. I will talk to you soon.
